For the Petcube GPS Tracker, cellular service is part of how the hardware works. The tracker has to send location data over mobile networks while the dog is away from home, so Petcube requires a plan.
What to check before buying
Look at the current subscription price, supported country, LTE availability where the dog spends time, and the cancellation/renewal terms. Those factors matter more than the device’s discounted purchase price when you calculate total ownership over one or two years.
Why Wi-Fi still appears in the specifications
Petcube uses Wi-Fi for Power Saving Zones. When the tracker recognizes a known safe area, it can reduce power consumption. Live tracking away from that area relies on the cellular side of the service.
Budget for the service, not just the hardware
A fair comparison with Fi, Tractive or another GPS collar should compare total annual or multi-year cost, coverage and battery behavior—not merely which tracker is cheapest on the day you order it.
