Airline Pet Carrier Size and Preparation Guide

No pet carrier is accepted by every airline or aircraft. Rules can change, and the same route may use different planes.

Verify the exact flight

Read the airline’s current pet policy, call when necessary, and ask about under-seat dimensions, pet reservations, weight rules, carrier type, and required documents.

Measure the pet and carrier

The pet should be able to rest safely inside with adequate ventilation. Compare external carrier dimensions with the airline limit and account for structural frames that do not compress.

Train before travel day

Leave the carrier open at home, feed treats inside, practice short closed sessions, and take calm car trips. Do not introduce confinement for the first time at the airport.

Health and safety

Discuss medical conditions, anxiety, and motion sickness with a veterinarian. Use an absorbent liner, secure zippers, and never open the carrier in an unsecured airport area.
