How to Clean a Pet Water Fountain

A fountain can look clean while hair and residue collect inside the pump. Follow the manual for the exact model and unplug the fountain before disassembly.

Routine cleaning steps

  1. Discard remaining water.
  2. Remove the filter and follow replacement guidance.
  3. Separate the reservoir, top, spout, and pump.
  4. Open the pump cover and clean around the impeller if the manual allows.
  5. Rinse all food-safe parts thoroughly.
  6. Reassemble, refill, and confirm normal flow.

Hard-water deposits

Mineral buildup can increase noise and reduce flow. Use only cleaning methods approved by the manufacturer, rinse thoroughly, and never mix cleaning chemicals.

How often?

Frequency depends on pet number, coat, saliva, room temperature, and water quality. Multi-pet homes often need more frequent maintenance.

Always provide backup water

Keep a separate clean bowl available during cleaning or power outages. Sudden changes in thirst or urination require veterinary advice.

Questions readers ask

Can I clean only the bowl?

No. Pumps, impellers, intake paths and seams can collect hair and biofilm.

Does a filter prevent biofilm?

No. Filters manage some debris and water characteristics but do not replace washing.

What if the pump becomes noisy?

Unplug it, check water level and clean the pump and impeller according to the manual.
